Lumecca IPL Accelerated

What is Lumecca IPL?

Our Lumecca IPL Accelerated is an advanced photo-facial treatment that harnesses the innovative power of the Lumecca IPL, widely recognized as the most powerful device on the market for addressing common skin concerns and imperfections.

Our signature Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment is designed for those wanting a more even complexion with an instantly bright and healthy glow. We take this powerful photo-facial to the next level by concluding your session with a brightening chemical peel that will expedite and enhance your results. The intensity and function of this peel can be customized to your specific skin concerns and desired downtime so that, whether you're a first-time or returning patient, we can ensure this treatment meets your needs.

As experts in our field, our highly trained laser technicians administer this treatment with precision, effectively targeting unwanted pigment, redness and vascularity while promoting collagen production, leaving you with ultimate skin rejuvenation.

How does Lumecca IPL work?

IPL is a broad spectrum of light emitted by a xenon flash tube producing precisely calibrated pulses. The energy generated from these pulses is absorbed by substances contained in the skin called chromophores. These chromophores are subsequently destroyed, and the targeted damage generates a healing response in the skin that promotes collagen and elastin production. These are critical elements for the strength and appearance of healthy skin. The function of an IPL varies slightly based on the primary chromophores being targeted.

  • Pigmented Lesions: The light energy targets the chromophore of melanin in the skin where there is excess or unwanted pigment, and/or sunspots. Once destroyed, the fragmented pigment either sheds from the skin's surface or is assimilated and eliminated by the lymphatic system, effectively reducing discolouration that can contribute to the appearance of aging and an uneven complexion.
  • Vascular Lesions: The light energy targets the chromophore of oxyhemoglobin (red pigments present in blood vessels). Light energy is converted into heat, which coagulates the targeted vessels. Subsequently, the coagulated blood is processed and removed via the lymphatic system, diminishing the appearance of redness and unwanted vascularity.
  • Skin Rejuvenation: The targeted application of light energy penetrates the dermis and is converted into heat energy. This controlled thermal effect triggers inflammation and the skin’s natural healing response which involves releasing regenerative growth factors. Concurrently, stimulated fibroblasts generate new collagen and elastin, enhancing skin firmness and elasticity.

What to do before Lumecca IPL?

Please note that if this is your first time having Lumecca IPL Accelerated at The Vanity Lab, or more than one year has elapsed since you last had this treatment with us, you will be required to have a test patch performed within 1-7 days prior to your treatment. This helps to ensure your safety, while also ensuring that we are treating you with the most effective settings. We also strongly recommend a test patch if you have had significant sun exposure since your last treatment.

We strongly recommend that the skin is prepped with medical-grade skincare, including regular retinol use, for at least four weeks before your treatment to enhance healing and post-treatment results.

  • Discontinue the use of strong at-home exfoliants such as retinols and AHAs for 7 days prior to your treatment.
  • Discontinue use of any doctor-prescribed retinols, or products containing benzoyl peroxide for 14 days prior to your treatment
  • Avoid sun exposure and self-tanning for at least 4 weeks prior to your treatment and ensure that you are using an SPF 50 daily.
  • You should not use alternative hair removal methods, such as electrolysis, hair removal creams, laser hair removal, or waxing 14 days before your treatment.
  • Please ensure that you have not taken any antibiotics within 14 days prior to your treatment.
  • Please ensure you have not had injectable treatments such as Botox or Filler within 14 days prior to your treatment.
  • If prone to fever blisters, an anti-viral should be started 3 days prior to your treatment.
  • Certain medications should be discontinued before your treatment. It is important to discuss all medications with your treating specialist.
  • Please ensure to complete your pre-treatment screening and consent forms ahead of your appointment and contact the clinic if indicated.

How many sessions of Lumecca IPL do I need and when will I see results?

At The Vanity Lab, we do not believe in a “one size fits all” approach to skincare. This is why we place such emphasis on the importance of an initial consultation. During this comprehensive consultation, our experts will gain insight into your preferences, concerns, lifestyle, goals, and expectations as well as obtain precise and tangible measurements of your skin’s current condition so we can track your progress.

In doing so, they are then able to perfectly curate a bespoke skin health program tailored to your unique needs. Your program will not only include specific recommendations on how many treatments you will require and the ideal time intervals for them but will also include the best medical-grade home care products on the market to enhance and maintain your results.

With the above information in mind, and as a very general guideline, patients looking for treatment of pigmented lesions may require 2-4 sessions of Lumecca IPL at approximately 4-6 week intervals and we recommend 1 session every 3-6 months for maintenance and prevention. Patients looking for treatment of vascular lesions may require 4-6 sessions of Lumecca IPL at approximately 4-6 week intervals and we recommend 1 session every 3-6 months for maintenance and prevention.

We recommend 2 sessions at 4-6 week intervals annually for maintenance.

Pigmented and vascular lesions will show improvement after every treatment. Skin rejuvenation will continue to show signs of improvement over the next 3 months as a result of collagen stimulation.

Typically, results from each session are apparent within 4-7 days post-treatment.

Please keep in mind that it is very normal for your first Lumecca IPL to provide the most dramatic results as the most superficial (and easy-to-reach) lesions are targeted. Subsequent treatments continue to dig away at the more stubborn underlying pigment and vascularity. This is normal and does not indicate that subsequent treatments are any less effective.
