What is a biostimulator?
Biostimulators such as Sculptra or Radiesse are an FDA and Health Canada Authorized treatment that provides long lasting results of up to two years, and is a great alternative to conventional hyaluronic acid fillers. These are advanced collagen stimulators that are used to improve facial volume and treat lipoatrophy, which is the facial wasting, or loss of facial fat. The advantage of using biostimulators to treat facial volume loss over hyaluronic based fillers is that it triggers a controlled inflammatory response in the skin to stimulate the production of collagen.
After the age of 18, we lose about 1% of our collagen annually, and as collagen is the building block to smooth and healthy skin, with the help of biostimulators, you can restore collagen loss.
How do biostimulators work?
Biostimulators such as Sculptra and Radiesse works with your body to stimulate collagen production lost to aging, rebuilding and reinforcing your skin’s structural foundation. Through a series of treatments, typically about three sessions over a few months, it restores the support and volume of youthful looking skin, providing results that can last up to two years.
Sculptra consists of Poly- L-Lactic Acid, which is a synthetic polymer that has been used in human body since 1960 and as medical suture material from 1970.
Radiesse consists of Calcium Hydroxylapatite, an injectable regenerative medicine treatment that stimulates collagen development, as well as elastin, new blood vessel growth, and proteoglycans (which helps with hydration). This helps improve your extracellular matrix, leading to better volume, thicker/healthier skin, and more elasticity.
Indications for biostimulators:
- Shallow to deep nasolabial folds
- Fine lines & wrinkles
- Facial volume loss
- Skin laxity
- Thin skin
When will I see results with biostimulators?
You will notice immediate results due to the swelling associated with the treatment. This will dissipate within the next 7-14 days. Gentle massage to the treatment area is recommended. Results are best seen about 12 weeks after the treatment once the collagen has had time to remodel. Skin thickness has been seen to improve between 2.1 - 6mm
